A Nihonga painter born in Tokyo. He studied at the Tokyo Fine Arts School and joined early on the movements of painters who aspired to a new Nihonga. In 1948 he took part with Yamamoto Kyūjin and others in founding the Sōzō Bijutsu (Creative Art Association), later working in the Nihonga section of the Shinseisaku Association. Taking animals such as deer and horses as his subjects, he attempted a modern plasticity that grasped his subjects with concision. He also took part in the project to reproduce the fire-damaged murals of the Kondō (Main Hall) at Hōryū-ji. Works such as Nara no Shika (Deer of Nara) and Uma (Horse) are preserved.
