Yonehara Unkai was a sculptor born in Shimane Prefecture. He first learned architectural carving as a temple-and-shrine carpenter, but, moved by the old Buddhist statues of Kyoto and Nara, he resolved to become a sculptor. He went to Tokyo to study under Takamura Kōun and came to be called Kōun's right-hand man. Bringing the realism of Western sculpture into wood carving, he rendered even the proportions, muscles, and blood vessels of the human body in fine detail. Together with his teacher Kōun, he also undertook large wood carvings such as the Niō guardian figures for the gate of Zenkō-ji temple. He left works such as Zenna (Saint Gennai).
