Yokoyama Taikan was a Nihonga painter born in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. He studied under Okakura Tenshin at the Tokyo Fine Arts School and, with his close friend Hishida Shunsō, experimented with a technique that suppressed outlines to render air and light. This manner was at first dismissed as mōrōtai ("the vague, hazy style," a term of criticism) but later came to be recognized. After Tenshin's death, in 1914 he revived the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Fine Arts Academy), a body for the study and presentation of modern Nihonga, and opened the Inten exhibition in opposition to the official salons, guiding many painters. He left numerous works, foremost among them the long handscroll Seisei Ruten (The Wheel of Life), which depicts the passage of the four seasons through Mount Fuji and the natural world. In 1937 he received the first Order of Culture.
