薗部澄は、東京に生まれた写真家。戦後、日本各地をめぐり、農山漁村の暮らしや年中行事、季節の風物を、温かいまなざしで記録した。失われゆく日本の風土と、そこに根づく人々の営みを写した作品で知られる。民俗や郷土をテーマにした写真集・出版物を数多く手がけ、昭和の日本の姿を伝える記録を残した写真家とされる。

Sonobe Kiyoshi was a photographer born in Tokyo. In the postwar years he traveled across Japan, recording with a warm gaze the life of farming, mountain, and fishing villages, their annual observances, and the features of each season. He is known for works that captured Japan's vanishing landscape and life and the activities of the people rooted in it. Having produced many photo books and publications on folk customs and local communities, he is regarded as a photographer who left a record conveying the face of Shōwa-era Japan.

소노베 기요시는 도쿄에서 태어난 사진가이다. 전후 일본 각지를 돌며 농산어촌의 삶과 세시 행사, 계절의 풍물을 따뜻한 시선으로 기록했다. 사라져 가는 일본의 풍토와 그곳에 뿌리내린 사람들의 삶을 담은 작품으로 알려져 있다. 민속과 향토를 주제로 한 사진집·출판물을 다수 펴내, 쇼와 시대 일본의 모습을 전하는 기록을 남긴 사진가로 평가된다.

Sonobe Kiyoshi était un photographe né à Tokyo. Dans l'après-guerre, il parcourut le Japon, consignant d'un regard chaleureux la vie des villages agricoles, montagnards et de pêcheurs, leurs fêtes annuelles et les atours de chaque saison. Il est connu pour des œuvres qui saisirent la terre et la vie du Japon en train de disparaître ainsi que les activités des gens qui y étaient enracinés. Auteur de nombreux livres et publications photographiques consacrés aux coutumes populaires et aux terroirs, il est considéré comme un photographe ayant laissé un témoignage du visage du Japon de l'ère Shōwa.

Sonobe Kiyoshi war ein in Tokio geborener Fotograf. In den Nachkriegsjahren bereiste er ganz Japan und dokumentierte mit warmem Blick das Leben der Bauern-, Berg- und Fischerdörfer, ihre jährlichen Bräuche und die Merkmale jeder Jahreszeit. Bekannt ist er für Werke, die die verschwindende Landschaft und Lebenswelt Japans und das Wirken der darin verwurzelten Menschen erfassten. Als Autor zahlreicher Fotobücher und Veröffentlichungen über Volksbräuche und örtliche Gemeinschaften gilt er als ein Fotograf, der ein Zeugnis vom Gesicht des Japan der Shōwa-Zeit hinterließ.
