副島種臣は、佐賀県に生まれた政治家・書家。明治政府の要職を務めた政治家として知られる一方、書にもすぐれた。中国の古典に学びながら、型にとらわれない雄大でおおらかな漢字書を残した。職業の書家とは異なる立場から、気宇の大きな書を生み出した能書家として、現在も高く評価される。

Soejima Taneomi was a statesman and calligrapher born in Saga Prefecture. Known as a statesman who held high office in the Meiji government, he excelled equally in calligraphy. Learning from the Chinese classics, he left kanji calligraphy of grand and generous scale, unbound by fixed forms. As a fine calligrapher who produced works of broad spirit from a standpoint different from that of the professional calligrapher, he remains highly esteemed today.

소에지마 다네오미는 사가현에서 태어난 정치가·서예가이다. 메이지 정부의 요직을 지낸 정치가로 알려진 한편, 글씨에도 뛰어났다. 중국 고전을 배우면서도 정형에 얽매이지 않는 웅대하고 활달한 한자 서예를 남겼다. 직업 서예가와는 다른 위치에서 기개 큰 글씨를 빚어낸 능서가로서 지금도 높이 평가된다.

Soejima Taneomi était un homme d'État et calligraphe né dans la préfecture de Saga. Connu comme un homme d'État qui occupa de hautes fonctions au sein du gouvernement de Meiji, il excellait tout autant en calligraphie. S'instruisant des classiques chinois, il laissa une calligraphie de kanji ample et généreuse, affranchie des formes établies. Comme un fin calligraphe qui produisit des œuvres d'un large souffle depuis une position différente de celle du calligraphe professionnel, il demeure aujourd'hui très estimé.

Soejima Taneomi war ein in der Präfektur Saga geborener Staatsmann und Kalligraf. Bekannt als Staatsmann, der hohe Ämter in der Meiji-Regierung bekleidete, war er ebenso ein hervorragender Kalligraf. An den chinesischen Klassikern gelernt, hinterließ er eine Kanji-Kalligrafie von großem und großzügigem Format, ungebunden an feste Formen. Als ein vortrefflicher Kalligraf, der aus einer von den Berufskalligrafen verschiedenen Haltung Werke von weitem Geist hervorbrachte, wird er bis heute hoch geschätzt.
