Noriyuki Haraguchi was an artist born in Kanagawa Prefecture. He is known for works such as Oil Pool, in which a steel frame holds a body of waste oil. The mirror-like surface of the oil reflects its surroundings, drawing in the viewer and the space alike. Using industrial materials just as they were, he is regarded as an artist within the current of Mono-ha, the tendency that questioned the relationship between things, space, and perception. He presented works charged with a weighty sense of matter both in Japan and abroad, and was internationally esteemed.
