Nobuo Sekine was an artist born in Saitama Prefecture. In 1968 he caused a great stir with Phase—Mother Earth, in which he dug a cylindrical pit into the ground and piled the excavated earth into an identical shape beside it. Presenting the material almost without working it, he is regarded as the artist emblematic of Mono-ha, the tendency that questioned the relationship between things and space. He went on to make sculptures combining stone and steel, and works for public spaces, both in Japan and abroad.
