Morita Shiryu was an avant-garde calligrapher born in Toyooka, Hyōgo Prefecture. His given name was Kiyoshi. He founded the avant-garde calligraphy group Bokujinkai and, through the publication of its journal and other means, introduced internationally a new calligraphy that joined writing and abstract painting. He associated with the Abstract Expressionist painters of Europe and America. He is known for works that pursued a form of ink and line beyond the meaning of the characters.
