小林斗盦は、東京に生まれた書家・篆刻家。石などに印を刻む「篆刻（てんこく）」を専門とし、その古典である中国の印章を深く研究した。あわせて篆書や隷書の漢字書も手がけた。印の歴史を学ぶ「印学」の研究や、貴重な印譜の編集にも力を尽くし、篆刻の普及に貢献した。篆刻の分野で2004年に文化勲章を受けた。

Kobayashi Toan was a calligrapher and seal carver born in Tokyo. He specialized in seal carving—the engraving of seals into stone and other materials—and studied deeply its classical models, the seals of China. He also worked in kanji calligraphy in seal and clerical script. He devoted himself to the study of sigillography, the discipline of the history of seals, and to editing precious seal albums, contributing to the spread of seal carving. He received the Order of Culture in 2004 in the field of seal carving.

고바야시 도안은 도쿄에서 태어난 서예가·전각가이다. 돌 등에 인장을 새기는 「전각」을 전문으로 하여 그 고전인 중국의 인장을 깊이 연구했다. 아울러 전서와 예서의 한자서도 다루었다. 인장의 역사를 배우는 「인학」 연구와 귀중한 인보(印譜)의 편집에도 힘써 전각의 보급에 기여했다. 전각 분야에서 2004년 문화훈장을 받았다.

Kobayashi Toan était un calligraphe et graveur de sceaux né à Tokyo. Il se spécialisa dans la gravure de sceaux — l'incision de sceaux dans la pierre et d'autres matériaux — et étudia en profondeur ses modèles classiques, les sceaux de Chine. Il pratiqua aussi la calligraphie de kanji en écritures sigillaire et cléricale. Il se consacra à l'étude de la sigillographie, la discipline de l'histoire des sceaux, et à l'édition de précieux albums de sceaux, contribuant à la diffusion de la gravure de sceaux. Il reçut l'ordre de la Culture en 2004 dans le domaine de la gravure de sceaux.

Se especializó en la talla de sellos —el grabado de sellos en piedra y otros materiales— y estudió a fondo sus modelos clásicos, los sellos de China. Cultivó también la caligrafía de kanji en escrituras sigilar y clerical. Se dedicó al estudio de la sigilografía, la disciplina de la historia de los sellos, y a la edición de valiosos álbumes de sellos, contribuyendo a la difusión de la talla de sellos. Recibió la Orden de la Cultura en 2004 en el campo de la talla de sellos.

Kobayashi Toan war ein in Tokio geborener Kalligraf und Siegelschneider. Er spezialisierte sich auf die Siegelschneidekunst – das Schneiden von Siegeln in Stein und andere Materialien – und studierte eingehend deren klassische Vorbilder, die Siegel Chinas. Er arbeitete auch in der Kanji-Kalligrafie in Siegel- und Kanzleischrift. Er widmete sich dem Studium der Siegelkunde, der Disziplin der Geschichte der Siegel, und der Herausgabe kostbarer Siegelalben und trug so zur Verbreitung der Siegelschneidekunst bei. Er erhielt 2004 den Kulturorden auf dem Gebiet der Siegelschneidekunst.
