木村荘八は東京に生まれた洋画家である。フュウザン会、草土社を経て春陽会で活動した。油彩画に加え、新聞小説の挿絵や装幀、随筆でも知られ、東京の市井や江戸風俗に強い関心を示した。《牛肉店帳場》や『新編東京繁昌記』の挿絵に、近代都市の生活感を細かく観察する姿勢が見られる。東京国立近代美術館などに作品が収蔵されている。

Kimura Shohachi was a Yōga (Western-style) painter born in Tokyo. After passing through the Fyūzan-kai and the Sōdosha, he was active in the Shun'yōkai. In addition to oil painting, he was known for newspaper-serial illustrations, book design, and essays, and showed a strong interest in the everyday life of Tokyo and the manners of old Edo. In Gyūnikuten chōba (At the Counter of a Beef Shop) and the illustrations for Shinpen Tōkyō hanjōki (A New Account of the Prosperity of Tokyo), one can see his close observation of the feel of life in the modern city. His works are held by institutions including The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

Kimura Shohachi était un peintre de style occidental (yōga) né à Tokyo. Après être passé par le Fyūzan-kai et le Sōdosha, il fut actif au sein du Shun'yōkai. Outre la peinture à l'huile, il était connu pour ses illustrations de romans-feuilletons, ses maquettes de livres et ses essais, et manifestait un vif intérêt pour la vie ordinaire de Tokyo et les mœurs du vieil Edo. Dans Gyūnikuten chōba (Au comptoir d'une boucherie) et les illustrations de Shinpen Tōkyō hanjōki (Nouveau récit de la prospérité de Tokyo), on perçoit son observation attentive de l'atmosphère de la vie urbaine moderne. Ses œuvres sont conservées notamment au Musée national d'art moderne de Tokyo.

Seine Werke befinden sich unter anderem im Nationalmuseum für moderne Kunst, Tokio.
