Born into a family of painters of the Kanō school—the school of Japanese-style painting patronized by the Tokugawa shogunate—he was active through the transition from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. He trained at the Kobikichō Kanō atelier in Edo and rose to prominence alongside Hashimoto Gahō. After a period of neglect in the early Meiji years, he met the American art scholar Ernest Fenollosa, then resident in Japan, and pursued the incorporation of Western realism and shading into Nihonga. He also took part in planning the newly founded Tokyo Fine Arts School (today the Tokyo University of the Arts) and is regarded as having laid the starting point of modern Nihonga. His late work Hibo Kannon (Merciful Mother Kannon) is known as the culmination of his art; he died only a few days after completing it.
