Gocho Shigeo was a photographer born in Kamo, Niigata Prefecture. After studying design, he turned to photography. He is known for the photobook SELF AND OTHERS and other works, which quietly captured, from close range, children and people he encountered in the streets. Without showiness, he left works that deeply question the relationship between the viewer and the subject. He died young, in his thirties, but his singular world has been reappraised since his death.

Gocho Shigeo était un photographe né à Kamo, dans la préfecture de Niigata. Après des études de design, il se tourna vers la photographie. Il est connu pour le livre photographique SELF AND OTHERS et d'autres œuvres, qui saisissaient avec calme, de près, les enfants et les gens rencontrés dans les rues. Sans ostentation, il laissa des œuvres qui interrogent profondément la relation entre le spectateur et le sujet. Il mourut jeune, dans la trentaine, mais son univers singulier a été réévalué depuis sa disparition.
